Most people who eventually study natural medicine don’t start out thinking they want a new career. They start because they want answers.

Maybe you’ve already felt this yourself — reading about nutrition, herbs or lifestyle medicine because something in your own health, or someone you love, isn’t improving the way you hoped. Conventional medicine can provide support, but doesn’t often address the root cause. You begin to realise that food, nutrients and lifestyle choices influence the body in ways that aren’t always fully explored in mainstream care.

As students start applying their new knowledge, the changes often show up first in their own health — and then ripple out to those around them. Before long, friends and family are asking for advice.

At the College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM), this journey often unfolds in three stages: healing yourself, helping your loved ones, and supporting others in your wider community.

Got a health issue you want to resolve? Ready to take charge of your family’s health or explore a career change?

First, You Heal Yourself

Many students enrol because they want to solve their own health puzzle. Natasha, a CNM Nutrition graduate, struggled with hormonal issues for years before studying natural medicine:

“From age sixteen I suffered from painful stomach cramps and amenorrhoea. I was diagnosed with PCOS and prescribed Metformin and the birth control pill. Living on medication wasn’t the long-term solution I wanted.”

Determined to understand her body, Natasha enrolled in CNM’s Nutrition diploma. She began applying what she learned, adjusting her diet, introducing targeted nutrients, and creating a lifestyle routine that supported her health.

“Implementing what I’ve learnt at CNM has transformed my health. After suffering with irregular periods for 10 years, I now have a regular cycle and my skin has completely cleared up.”

Studying natural health doesn’t just give information — it gives the tools to take your own wellbeing into your hands. Understanding how the body works and what it needs allows you to make lasting changes.

Then You Help the People Closest to You

Once you begin seeing improvements in your own health, the next step often happens naturally: you start supporting those closest to you.

Chris, another CNM Nutrition graduate, began studying after facing serious health challenges within her own family:

“When my twin son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and autism, and his sister with global developmental delay and seizures, my world turned upside down. Traditional medical interventions offered limited relief, leaving me feeling helpless as a parent.”

Through her studies at CNM, Chris learned practical strategies to support her children’s health. Over time, she saw significant positive improvements:

“My twins are 17 years old now and doing very well. My daughter’s mood is much better and my son with autism no longer has temper tantrums. He also speaks up more and is physically stronger. My third child, who used to have eczema, no longer gets flare-ups. Knowing what foods damage and support the body has been a blessing for my family.”

Many students describe this stage as empowering. Instead of feeling helpless, they now have knowledge and tools to make a tangible difference to those they love.

Finally, You Begin Helping Others

For most graduates, personal interest in natural health evolves into a career helping others.

Liz Clarke, a CNM Nutrition graduate, established her own practice offering both online and face-to-face consultations. She highlights one of the most rewarding aspects of her work:

“Witnessing clients’ ‘aha’ moments, realising the impact of their dietary choices, is truly remarkable and is like nothing else I’ve ever experienced.”

Helping people reconnect with their health in this way is both meaningful and fulfilling. As Liz explains:

“Learning about natural ways to improve health is so rewarding. Not only will it enhance your own wellbeing, but you’ll also empower others to thrive and attain optimal health.”

This is often how the journey unfolds: you study to improve your own health, then your family benefits, and eventually your wider community does too.

Could This Be the Next Step for You?

The diploma courses at the College of Naturopathic Medicine provide both evidence-based knowledge and practical skills, giving you the confidence to apply natural medicine in your life and future career. Whether your goal is to enhance your own health or to help others, studying natural therapies can be one of the most rewarding decisions you make.

If you’re curious about what studying with CNM could look like, the best next step is to speak with a course consultant. They can guide you through the different diploma options and answer any questions you may have.

Sometimes, a single conversation is all it takes to begin a completely new chapter in your life!
