EMF Radiation – The Hidden Health Hazard
How to reduce exposure to harmful electromagnetic fields
Electromagnetic fields, also known as EMFs, are invisible areas of energy that are created by the movement of electrically charged particles.
They are found all around us, in everything, from the earth’s natural magnetic field to the electricity that powers our homes and appliances. While EMFs can be helpful in many ways, they also pose certain dangers to human health.
Learn how EMFs damage health, why you need to be cautious around 5G technology and the detrimental impact of mobile phone use. Find out the signs and symptoms associated with electromagnetic stress, and how to reduce your exposure to harmful electromagnetic frequencies.
What are EMFs?
There is an invisible world of frequencies happening around us every single second of the day, even when we’re asleep. EMFs are types of radiation in the form of visible light, microwaves and radio waves that are generated by the sun, stars and electrical devices. Our exposure to electromagnetic radiation has increased dramatically (by one quintillion) in the last two decades and this is largely due to the use of technology. With 24/7 wireless communication, smart TVs and phones, automated household appliances, heavy duty power lines, and now 5G, we’re constantly exposed to harmful frequencies that are damaging our health.
Why are EMFs harmful for health?
One concern with EMFs is their potential to disrupt the body’s natural electromagnetic field. The human body is made up of trillions of cells, each with its own electromagnetic field. When these fields are disrupted, health problems can arise such as fatigue, headaches, dizziness, nausea, concentration problems, digestive issues, heart palpitations and cancer.
A significant source of EMFs is power lines and electrical wiring. These can produce extremely low frequency (ELF) EMFs that have been linked to an increased risk of cancer, particularly leukaemia. Studies have shown that children who live in homes with high levels of ELF EMFs are more likely to develop cancer compared to those who live in homes with lower levels.
Another source of EMFs is electronic devices such as mobile phones, computers and televisions. These devices emit radiofrequency (RF) EMFs which are known to cause brain tumours, DNA damage and fertility problems. One study found that people who use their mobile phones for more than an hour a day have a significantly higher risk of brain tumours, especially on the side of the head where the phone is typically held.
Men who use their laptops on their laps or keep their mobile phones in their pockets have shown to have a lower sperm count and poorer quality sperm, potentially leading to fertility problems.
A major concern with EMFs is their potential to interfere with the body’s natural sleep patterns. The human body is sensitive to changes in electromagnetic fields, and exposure to EMFs can disrupt the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep. This can lead to insomnia, fatigue and other sleep disorders.
EMFs may also affect the health of pregnant women and their unborn children. Some studies have found that pregnant women who are exposed to high levels of EMFs are more likely to have miscarriages. EMF exposure is also linked to birth defects and developmental problems in children.
Why does 5G technology pose a risk?
The introduction of 5G technology has sparked a huge debate about the possible dangers of this new technology. 5G is a wireless technology that is being rolled out across the world, promising faster speeds and greater connectivity. While the new technology has the potential to revolutionise the way we communicate, access information and use the internet, there are also health risks associated with using it.
The electromagnetic radiation emitted by 5G networks is more powerful than that of 4G networks. The frequencies used by 5G networks have shorter wavelengths meaning the radiation can penetrate deeper into the human body. 5G technology relies on a network of antennae that are installed in close proximity to homes and businesses. If you live or work close by to a 5G antenna, your risk increases significantly.
5G technology has the potential to:
Increase health risks and cancer due to a surge in EMF exposure. Fertility issues, neurological damage and the risk to pregnant women (and their unborn babies) may also increase.
Create digital inequality – 5G networks are expensive to install and maintain, and only those who can afford it will be able to access the technology.
Fuel government control and loss of personal privacy and liberties. 5G technology could potentially be used by governments and corporations to track individuals and collect data on their activities, and also increase their control over citizens and consumers.
Mobile phone use
The use of mobile phones has become an integral part of everyday life for many people. However, using mobile phones can have a detrimental effect on your health due to the electromagnetic radiation they emit, causing numerous health problems including headaches, memory loss and cancer. The blue light emitted by mobile phones has been linked to disrupted sleep patterns and increased risk of depression.
The physical effects of mobile phone use also pose a health risk as less time is spent engaging in physical activities and socialising with others. This could lead to weight gain, heart disease, stress and anxiety. A constant bombardment of notifications, emails and social media distractions can decrease productivity, focus and concentration levels, as well as create feelings of overwhelm and low self-esteem.
How to reduce your exposure to EMFs
The first step to protecting your body from EMFs is to identify the potential sources of EMFs in your environment. Common sources of EMFs include mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers, computers, microwaves and other electronics. It is also important to be aware of emerging sources of EMFs such as smart meters and 5G networks.
Once you have identified potential sources of EMFs, you can then take steps to reduce your exposure.
Limit your exposure to electronic devices, especially those that emit high levels of RF EMFs including mobile phones and laptops – this is the most effective way to reduce EMF exposure. It’s also a good idea to throw away your microwave!
Keep electronic devices at a distance from your body and don’t keep your phone in your pocket or on your body. You should keep your mobile phone at least six inches away from your head while using it.
Use a hands-free device such as a headset or the speakerphone function wherever possible as it will reduce the amount of radiation you’re exposed to from your phone.
Adopt a device-free bedroom policy – no TVs, phones or smart music devices. EMFs can disrupt sleep so charging your mobile in the bedroom or keeping it near your head at night are big no-nos.
Don’t use electric blankets or metal-coil mattresses. Electric blankets expose you to high-powered low frequency radiation that can penetrate the body – sleeping all night with an electric blanket on is particularly harmful. The metal in coil mattresses act like an antenna to amplify EMF radiation from devices in the home, especially Bluetooth and WIFI-powered devices. Pocket innerspring or hybrid mattresses made from natural materials such as natural latex, wool or cotton are a better option.
Invest in EMF protection products such as EMF-blocking cases for your mobile phone and laptop, and EMF-blocking fabrics that can be used to make curtains and clothing. These products are designed to help reduce your exposure to EMFs by blocking or absorbing the energy.
Paint your walls with EMF blocking paint. There are now paints available that are designed to block EMFs by reflecting the electromagnetic frequencies away from your home.
Use grounding/ earthing technology like grounding or earthing sheets, mats, bands or patches. Grounding technology works by connecting your body to the Earth’s natural energy which can help to neutralise and reduce the EMFs you are exposed to.
Eat antioxidant-rich foods including organic vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds. These foods reduce oxidative stress in the body and protect your cells and tissues from damage caused by free radicals. Learn more about CNM’s Naturopathic Diet.
Limit your time in high-EMF environments like airports, x-ray rooms and power plants as it can expose you to higher levels of EMFs.
Incorporate EMF-protecting herbs and spices into your diet. Holy basil, gingko biloba, turmeric, garlic, cayenne pepper, green tea, ginger, oregano and Reishi mushroom contain powerful compounds that have shown to reduce the effects of EMFs by as much as 70%. They are also rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties which can help protect cells from free-radical damage caused by EMFs. You can add these herbs and spices to food (always opt for organic) or take them in a concentrated supplemental form.
Protect yourself from EMFs
While EMFs can be helpful in many ways, it is important to be aware of the potential dangers they pose to human health. By taking steps to reduce your exposure to EMFs, you can help protect yourself and loved ones from the potential negative effects of these invisible energy fields.
