I trained as a Personal Trainer originally because my own weight and health issues had got me into exercise. Exercise fixed the weight problem but it took nutritional changes to deal with my hormonal imbalance. I did my certificate in Public Health Nutrition as part of my PT training, but as I geeked away further I began to realise that nutrition has a bigger impact on body composition than exercise, and that so called ‘healthy’ foods can contribute to health problems. So without addressing diet, exercise is only one part of the picture in getting fit and healthy.
I wanted to look at the bigger picture and be able to advise my PT clients about nutrition, so I enrolled to study Naturopathic Nutrition at CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine). Not only was their part time course convenient for me as a working PT, but their emphasis on Naturopathy, or ‘Nature Cure’ was particularly appealing to me. As a student at CNM I gained a truly fascinating understanding of the role of Food as Medicine, and how a one-size-fits-all dietary approach is not an effective health model.
My partner, Personal Trainer Matt Whitmore and I run a successful fitness business called ‘Fitter London’. After I graduated from CNM we branched out and also opened ‘Fitter Food’. It’s a great combination where my in-depth nutritional knowledge and Matt’s love of creative cooking (he’s equally passionate about fitness and food), allows us to offer a complete package to improve our clients’ health and vitality.
Our personalised health and nutrition services include structured exercise programs and guidance on nutritional supplementation and sports performance, plus bespoke nutritional therapeutic support for specific health issues, illness and fat loss. We range from giving short expert guidance, to a complete ‘nutritional and training overhaul’ incorporating personalised training and meal planning options.
By addressing nutrition as well as exercise, we get fantastic results, which boosts our reputation. The knowledge and credibility I gained by studying at CNM also allows me to write a popular food blog. Eating an awesome diet of good quality, great tasting and easily accessible produce is essential in living a long, healthy, energised and positive life. Together, Matt and I create no-fuss, easy to prepare, delicious recipe and meal ideas that won’t break the bank. For anyone who missed it, we’re also the authors of a book called ‘The Paleo Primer’, published by Ebury. It’s a busy life!
My gaining a well-respected qualification in Naturopathic Nutrition has been fundamental to the growth of our business and income. In terms of personal development, what I learnt about nutrition at CNM transformed my own health and fitness. Using my knowledge to help others achieve their healthiest and fittest selves possible, is hugely motivating and enjoyable for me.
