Remedies for fear of flying, sunburn, food poisoning and more!

Planning a summer getaway? Whether you’re jetting off on a long-haul adventure or enjoying a staycation in the UK or Ireland, packing a natural first aid kit can be a game-changer.

Homeopathy is a gentle, effective and easy-to-use natural therapy. It offers a smart, sustainable way to care for yourself and your family while travelling – without the need for harsh chemicals or medications.

We spoke to Zoe Scanlan, CNM’s Homeopathy Course Director, who shares her top tips for using homeopathy on holiday, from must-pack remedies to handling common travel complaints like jet lag, sunburn and tummy troubles. She also explains how CNM’s upcoming online homeopathy course can help you feel confident using homeopathy wherever you are in the world.

Why is homeopathy a useful addition to a travel first-aid kit?

Homeopathy is a brilliant tool for travel because it’s safe, natural and suitable for all ages, even babies and children. With no toxic side effects, it’s a reassuring choice for parents who want a gentle but effective way to treat everyday ailments on the go. The remedies come as small, sweet-tasting pilules, making them easy and palatable for kids. They are also incredibly convenient – compact, lightweight and inexpensive. A homeopathic travel kit takes up hardly any space in your bag, and the remedies inside can help with everything from anxiety and jet lag to tummy upsets and insect bites.

What are some of your top homeopathic remedies to pack for holidays?

Whether you’re travelling abroad or staying local, it’s helpful to have a few key remedies on hand to manage common holiday complaints.

Travel anxiety and fear of flying

Fear of flying is incredibly common, and homeopathy can offer real support for calming the nerves and easing physical symptoms of anxiety:

  • Aconite 30c – For intense, terrifying fear or panic before flying, especially when there’s a sense of impending doom or fixation on the plane crashing. Argentum Nitricum 30c – For anxiety linked to heights or claustrophobia. May also cause digestive upset, such as diarrhoea, from nerves.
  • Gelsemium 30c – For anticipatory anxiety with trembling, weakness and heaviness. The person may feel paralysed by fear and even refuse to board the plane.

Suggested dose: Take three pilules on the day of the flight and three pilules during the flight.

Jet lag, travel sickness and sunburn

Jet lag can ruin the first few days of a trip. Homeopathy can gently rebalance your system with remedies like:

  • Radium bromatum 30c – For radiation exposure on planes.
  • Arnica 30c – For that bruised, heavy feeling after long travel
  • Cocculus 30c – For tiredness, dizziness and disorientation.

Suggested dose: On arrival, once daily at bedtime for the first two days. Take three pilules each time.

For travel sickness, remedies like Cocculus and Nux Vomica can help ease nausea, whether you’re in a car, on a plane, or at sea. Cocculus is ideal when nausea is accompanied by vertigo from even the slightest motion, often with tiredness and anxiety. Nux Vomica suits those who feel irritable and have constant nausea that’s worse when wearing tight clothing.

Suggested dose: One dose of three pilules, prior to travel. Repeat every 10-15 mins as needed.

For sunburn, Belladonna 30c can calm the heat and redness of sunburn, while Cantharis 30c is great for more intense burns, especially if blistering occurs.

Suggested dose: One dose hourly with a maximum of three doses.

Tummy troubles and food poisoning

Digestive upsets are one of the most common holiday complaints, whether it’s from unfamiliar foods, overindulgence or a change in routine.

  • Arsenicum Album 30c – The go-to remedy for food poisoning, especially with burning diarrhoea, vomiting, restlessness, anxiety, and an unquenchable thirst.
  • Lycopodium 30c – For bloating, gurgling, wind and a heavy, full feeling – often from overeating (especially sweets). Symptoms may be accompanied or triggered by nervousness.
  • Nux Vomica 30c – Ideal after too much rich food, alcohol or late nights. Think indigestion, nausea, or constipation with a constant urge to go but little relief. Also great for hangovers.
  • Ipecac 30c – For persistent, intense nausea that isn’t relieved by vomiting.

Suggested dose: Take hourly for maximum of three to four doses.

General travel remedies

  • Silica 30c – Eases ear pain from pressure changes during take-off and landing. Suggested dose: Give every 15 mins for maximum of three to four doses.
  • Pulsatilla 30c – Supports emotional adjustment, helpful for children who feel homesick. Take one dose prior to travel and on arrival.
  • China 30c – Replenishes after dehydration or fluid loss. Take three times daily for one day.
  • Rhus tox 30c – For sprains or stiffness after overexertion (like hiking or long walks). Take one dose after the sprain and one dose at bedtime that night.
  • Apis 30c – Soothes bee or wasp stings and allergic swelling. Take one dose after the bite, and one dose at bedtime that night.
  • Urtica urens 30c – Eases rashes, hives or mild sunburn. Take three doses daily for one to two days.

How should remedies be taken? Any dos and don’ts?

  • Avoid touching remedies with your fingers – tip them from the bottle into the lid and under the tongue.
  • Store away from mobile phones and strong-smelling substances (like mint or perfume).
  • Follow the dosage guidelines in your kit or reference guide.

Is it safe to self-prescribe remedies on holiday, or should you see a homeopath first?

Homeopathy is safe, natural and ideal for self-care, especially with a basic kit and guidebook. Brands like Helios and Ainsworths offer excellent travel kits with instructions, making it easy even for beginners. That said, if you’d like personalised advice before you go, many homeopaths offer one-off consultations. But it’s not essential – learning a few basics goes a long way.

CNM has launched a new online homeopathy course. Can you tell us more about it?

CNM’s Homeopathy diploma course will be fully available online from September 2026 (with the Biomedicine year starting in September 2025). The course runs over four years (one year of Biomed, followed by three years of Homeopathy) and graduates receive diplomas in both Naturopathy and Homeopathy.

You’ll learn everything from homeopathic philosophy to Materia Medica (remedy knowledge), clinical practice and homeopathy for various health conditions. The course also includes business skills and clinic training, so students feel confident and ready to practise professionally. Best of all, clinics are held online – so you can study from anywhere in the world.

Will the course help students use homeopathy with confidence?

Definitely! Students will learn how to use homeopathy effectively for everyday health issues, as well as in professional practice for chronic and emotional challenges, that so many face these days. Homeopathy has a strong focus on rebalancing mental and emotional wellbeing, rather than just supporting the physical body, which many other forms of medicine are limited to.

Where can people find out more or sign up to the course?
